Getting Inspired
When it is time to embark on a new project in the garden, a good place to start is to look around for sources of inspiration. Whether or not you are planning to do the work yourself or would like someone else to take care of the details, having a feel for the desired outcome is important.
And just where can we get our inspiration from?
As with other home projects, there is a wealth of ideas available from magazines, books, and the internet. A good idea is to create a story board with all the elements that inspire you. This could include pictures of features or finished gardens, notes on whether you want flowers or foliage, preferred plant colours, and samples of materials for the hardscape elements. This process may take some time but is often aided by lively discussions over your favorite bottle of red.
Home, garden and lifestyle shows on TV provide a wide and varied range of options
If you have trouble visualizing the finished result, then visiting open gardens or display homes can really help. There are several options locally throughout the year to access these. Garden Expos and Shows are great showcases for many products and ideas to do with gardens and landscaping. Don’t panic if you can’t get to the Chelsea Flower show in England or the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. There are many other garden shows and expos throughout the country. These are great places to see the latest products and ideas. You can talk to the suppliers and see presentations by experts.
Once you know what you want for your landscape or garden but are unsure how to bring it to fruition, you can then engage a professional designer or landscaper to help you make it happen. If you can’t decide what to do, or are having difficulty agreeing on what to do, a third party professional should be able to come up with a solution that works.
Your garden may start with one small step, one small idea, but by tapping into the many sources of inspiration available you will soon be taking giant strides in its beauty.
